InkTrail HSK helps you learn to write Chinese characters and master the HSK 3.0 vocabulary on iPhone and iPad. Below are answers to common questions. If you still need help, email us; including your device model and iOS version helps us reply faster.
What does InkTrail HSK do?
InkTrail covers the full HSK 3.0 vocabulary: levels 1 to 6, plus levels 7 to 9 as one advanced band. For each word you can watch an animated stroke-order demonstration, practice writing it with feedback on every stroke, and review it on a spaced-repetition schedule. You can also export printable tracing worksheets.
How does handwriting practice work?
Each word starts from a blank grid, so practice shows whether you can really write it from memory. If you get stuck, you can peek at the outline or trace along; words you finish with help come back for review soon. Your writing score updates each word's review schedule automatically.
What is free, and what does InkTrail Pro add?
Free: unlimited reviews, 5 new words per day, 1 worksheet export per day, the Trouble Words list, widgets, daily reminders, and your practice streak. InkTrail Pro: unlimited new words, unlimited worksheet exports, and targeted practice that turns your trouble words into a focused round. Pro is available as a monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time lifetime purchase. Prices are shown in the App.
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
Pro is tied to your Apple ID and is usually restored automatically when you open the App while signed in with the same Apple ID. If Pro isn't active, open any Pro screen (for example, tap "Export Worksheet" a second time on the same day) and tap "Restore Purchases".
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose InkTrail Pro, and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid being charged for the next period. You keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for.
How do I request a refund?
Purchases are processed by Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple. Visit https://reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, and choose the purchase you want to report.
Does my progress sync between my iPhone and iPad?
Not yet. Each device keeps its own progress, and deleting the App removes the progress on that device. Progress is included in your regular iOS device backups (such as iCloud Backup), so restoring a backup brings it back.
How do I change the App's language?
InkTrail uses the language you set for it in iOS. Tap the gear icon on the home screen to open About, then tap "Change app language". This opens iOS Settings, where you can choose English or Chinese for InkTrail.
How do I set a daily reminder?
Tap the gear icon on the home screen to open About, turn on "Remind me to practice", and pick a time. If the switch turns itself off, allow notifications for InkTrail in iOS Settings > Notifications, then try again.
How do I add a widget?
Touch and hold an empty area of your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose 墨痕 HSK (InkTrail's name on your Home Screen). Three widgets are available: Word of the Day, Today's Practice, and Trouble Words. Word of the Day and Today's Practice can also be added to the Lock Screen.
Where do the definitions and stroke-order data come from?
Stroke-order data comes from the makemeahanzi project, the HSK 3.0 word list from complete-hsk-vocabulary, and English definitions from CC-CEDICT. Full attributions and licenses are in the App under About > "Open Source & Data". If you spot an error, email us the word and what looks wrong.
